Once a year, the “My Family Story” contest takes place in Beit Hatfutsot in Tel Aviv, and brings together young Jews from all around the world. The first thing the participants of this competition do is intensively reflect upon the history of their own family. In the next step, the students present their reflections in an artistic way, growing in awareness of their own families and heritage.

In 2016, 155 institutions with over 20,000 students from over 28 countries around the world participated in the event. Fifty of the 20,000 students were invited to travel to Israel, to present at an exhibition and receive honors.

Lauder Beth Zion’s student, Rebecca Spinner, was selected in this group of recognized contestants, for her project, “The Magical Life Jacket.” In addition, Lauder Beth Zion’s Alexandra Krioukov also received such honors, for her “Family Tree” project, and was featured in this year’s book of the best.

Rebecca Spinner tells about her trip to Beit Hatfutsot:

In June, my mother and I flew to Israel because I won the Beit Hatfutsot competition and was invited to the ceremony. The ceremony took place on my birthday. On this exciting day, the program started at 9:30 am and finished at 6:30 pm. There were many points on the agenda: We got to know each other, saw different historic symbols of Jewish practice, such as Menorot and Shabbat candles. After the entertaining program, our exhibition was opened, and we had a special ceremony at which all of the children received a certificate. As fast as the day had started, it soon ended.

It was very interesting because people from all over the world participated in the competition. There were participants from the USA, from African and Australian countries.

The Lauder Beth Zion School congratulates Rebecca and Alexandra, and is proud to have them participate in such a unique and connecting event.
